Parker had no intention of keeping that promise. She couldn’t really expect him to. As an academic and a teacher, he had a responsibility to protect future students of the guy. But maybe he could handle this without getting the administration involved any further. He hoped Mr. Morton was in his office when he pulled into the community college parking lot the following day.

“Mr. Morton? I’m Dr. Parker Flagg. I teach at Clemson. I wondered if I could have a few minutes of your time.” The office was tiny and stuffed with clutter. There was barely enough room for the chair in front of the desk. And it was covered in folders and papers.

“Of course, Dr. Flagg. Come on in. Have a seat.” The little man rushed around the cheap desk and cleared the chair, throwing the papers onto another pile on his desk.

Maybe the leather portfolio was simply lost. Parker scanned the surfaces, spotting it under a stack of papers on the steel file cabinet next to the desk. “Thank you. I’ll come straight to the point. My daughter’s nanny is in your class. Robin Warren.”

To his credit, Mr. Morton kept a straight face. “Yes, of course. She’s one of my older students. I didn’t realize she worked for you. She mentioned working in a bar ...”

“She does. She also cares for my daughter for a few hours per day. She’s practically family.” Or would be soon if things progressed the way he hoped they would.

“I see. I’m sorry to have to say this, but Miss Warren made her bed, and now she must lay in it. I can’t grade something I did not receive. As I told her in my email, she can still pass the class if she does well on the final. There’s nothing else I can do.”

Parker knew he was lying. There was plenty he could do if he wanted to. Looking for the project was the least of them. He got the feeling the guy was going to do everything he could to fail her, and he wasn’t about to let that happen.

“That’s it, over there, if I’m not mistaken. I gave Miss Warren the portfolio myself. You’ll find the Clemson logo embossed on it.” Parker pointed to the top of the file cabinet.

“This right here?” Mr. Morton pulled the folder from the stack of papers, sending half of them sailing to the floor. He opened it, feigning surprise.

“That’s the one. I am sure you will get this graded right away.” Parker rose and walked out of the man’s office.

He walked to his car, thinking. There had to be something he could do to help Robin finish her degree. He pulled out his phone.

“Clemson University, Financial Aid. This is Kelly McDonald. What can I do for you?”

“Kelly, it’s Parker. I was hoping you could work another miracle for me.”

“Who is it this time?” Kelly’s tone was resigned. This wasn’t the first time he’d called in a favor for one of his students.

“My nanny. Don’t ask.
